We provide passionate, knowledgable, well-rounded and relatable instructors to lead courses that are tailored to address student learning outcomes based on the needs of each group and the context in which they play or work.

Jill Weenink - Owner

Jill has been in the emergency medical field since 2014. She has worked in remote and metro areas all over Alberta and BC as a Primary Care Paramedic. She found the outdoors a place to escape her work-life which led her to take the Adventure Guide Program at TRU. This program further developed her skills in remote backcountry environments. While attending the TRU program in Kamloops, BC she worked with a High Acuity Response Team. Her two passions collided when she was exposed to wilderness medicine and started teaching wilderness medical courses.

Currently, she is working towards obtaining her Fellowship in the Academy of Wilderness Medicine while working on ambulance and for an advanced aeromedical rescue company. In her spare time she volunteers for Nelson Search and Rescue. Although she travels a lot for work, she call Nelson home.

“I love working together with groups of students and applying the principles of wilderness emergency medicine to their unique personal or professional setting. With an open and collaborative learning environment, we can share the knowledge and the experience we each bring to the table using that to inspire the confidence to act when presented with even the most difficult situations. I look forward to working with each one of you!”

Shane Derry - River Med Instructor

Shane has spent many years working as a trip leader and guide on the rivers of British Columbia, as well as internationally on rivers in the US and Africa. Currently, in the summers, Shane leads multi-day river trips on the Chilko River.

Discovering his passion for the river at the TRU Adventure Guide program, Shane has devoted the better half of the last decade to being on the water. Now, through the American Canoe Association (ACA), Shane is contributing to bringing a new wave of SRT instruction to British Columbia. The focus is on courses specifically tailored to the rivers where we work professionally and enjoy recreationally. Hoping to establish a new standard for professional river runners, these courses provide a more in-depth look into our world as guides and boaters in British Columbia.
